Ferry crossing Sweden

Sweden is becoming increasingly popular as a holiday destination. The rolling landscape, covered with forests and lakes, is beautiful. But the capital Stockholm and major cities such as Gothenburg and Malmö are also very popular. Many Dutch people go on holiday to Sweden by car or camper. However, to get there you must cross the Baltic Sea from Denmark or Germany. There is now a bridge over the Sound from Copenhagen, but there are still ferries that make the crossing every day. You can make the crossing to Sweden from several countries. There are ferries and a bridge from neighboring Denmark, but there are also crossings from Germany. There are a number of things to pay attention to when booking a crossing.

Points of attention

Time on board

One crossing takes a lot longer than the other. This has advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage of the longer journey is that it is often more expensive. However, do not forget that you do not have to drive these kilometers and therefore do not use fuel. The advantage of a longer crossing can be that you save an overnight stay. However, for a good night’s sleep you need to book a cabin.

Arrival times

The time you arrive somewhere can vary considerably, from early in the morning to late in the evening. Bear in mind that if you arrive late in the evening, you will have little to no time to look for a place to spend the night. Arranging this in advance is therefore wise.

Tax-free shopping

It seems attractive to shop tax-free on the ships. However, the prices of alcohol and cigarettes are often adjusted to Scandinavian prices. These items are often more expensive on the ferry than in the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany.

Routes

The main routes to Sweden are the Helsingor-Helsingborg, Frederikshavn-Gothenburg, Grenaa-Varberg route. The Helsingor-Helsingborg route is only offered in combination with the Puttgarden-Rodby route. This is the crossing from Germany to Denmark. There are also crossings from Germany, Norway, Finland and Poland. However, the crossings from Norway, Finland and Poland are not interesting from the Netherlands, which is why we limit ourselves here to the crossings from Denmark and Germany to Sweden. There are several companies that offer crossings. Below is an overview per company, prices may vary per season and time of booking. The summer season is generally the most expensive season. When booking, also pay attention to any packages that may apply to you, for example, two adults, two children and a car. The prices below are an indication.
