Greenland; The largest island in the world

Greenland. For many people it is an unknown area. This is partly because the country is very sparsely populated. This is mainly due to the fact that the country is largely uninhabitable due to the cold. Greenland also has its own national dishes, famous residents and national sports.

History of Greenland

Because Greenland is an unknown and sparsely populated island, little real history is known about it. The country owes its name to the Norwegian Viking ‘Erik the Red’. He was exiled in his own country and then set off on a journey west. This journey led him to a gigantic island, which he named Greenland. After Erik the Red was one of the first settlers to settle in Greenland, more followed. Suddenly, almost all colonies were abandoned around the 15th century, probably due to changing climatic conditions. Later, Greenland was recolonized by the Danes, after which Greenland fell under the administration of the Danish Kingdom. This lasted until 2009, the year in which Greenland gained almost complete self-government. In short, Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Historic low point?

In the year 982, Erik the Red founded the first Scandinavian settlement on Greenland. And in the 15th century, Norwegian culture suddenly came to an end.
