Currency, money and payment in Lithuania
The national currency of Lithuania is the Litas (Lt). There are banknotes of 10, 20, 100, 200 and 500 Litas. The Litas is further subdivided into 100 centas (ct). Coins have a value of 5 Lt., 2 Lt, 1 Lt and 50 ct, 20 ct, 10 ct, 5 ct, 2 ct and 1 ct. The Litas has been pegged to the US Dollar since its introduction in 1993 and has since February 2002 a fixed exchange rate against the Euro (1 Euro = 3.45 Litas). Foreign money can easily be exchanged at banks (usually open between 8am and 6pm, later in the large shopping centres).
The introduction of the Euro in Lithuania was planned for 2007, but the European Commission decided that Lithuania was not ready for this, mainly because inflation exceeded the allowed limit by 0.1%. Lithuania still has the ambition to adopt the Euro, this time on January 1, 2015.
