Ferry crossing Finland

Finland, known as the land of a thousand lakes, is located in the north-east of Europe. Finland is known for its beautiful nature, but also for its vibrant cities such as the capital Helsinki and the culture in which the sauna plays an important role. More and more Dutch people find their way to Finland for a holiday, often by car or camper. But what’s the easiest way to get there? Which crossing with which ferry is most suitable for you? Below is an overview and tips on what to pay attention to when booking. One can make the crossing to Finland from several countries. There are ferries from neighboring Sweden, but also from Germany, Poland and Estonia. There are a number of things to pay attention to when booking a crossing.

Points of attention

Time on board

One crossing takes a lot longer than the other. This has advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage of the longer journey is that it is often more expensive. However, do not forget that you do not have to drive these kilometers and therefore do not have to pay for fuel. The advantage of a longer crossing can be that you save an overnight stay. However, for a good night’s sleep you need to book a cabin.

Arrival times

The time you arrive somewhere can vary considerably, from early in the morning to late in the evening. Bear in mind that if you arrive late in the evening, you will have little to no time to look for a place to spend the night. Arranging this in advance is therefore wise.

Tax-free shopping

It seems attractive to shop tax-free on the ships. However, the prices of alcohol and cigarettes are often adjusted to Scandinavian prices. These items are often more expensive on the ferry than in the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany.

Routes

The main routes to Finland are the Stockholm-Turku, Stockholm-Helsinki and Tallinn-Helsinki routes. There are also crossings from Germany and Poland.
