Holiday in Croatia

Croatia is the ideal holiday destination. You will find sun, sea and beach, but also culture: Roman ruins and old, medieval cities and other sights. The Istrian peninsula is the most touristy part.

Croatia: sun holiday

If you are looking for a sunny holiday destination, Croatia is the place for you. The coast stretches for 1,800 kilometers. The Croatian coast consists mainly of pebble beaches and rocks. It is therefore advisable to wear water shoes, because of the sharp rocks.
Croatia has 120 islands. The large islands are easily accessible by boat. It is possible to rent canoes and kayaks at tourist coastal towns. You can also snorkel or scuba dive.

climate

Croatia has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers of more than 10 hours of sunshine per day. The average temperature is 26 C in August. The Adriatic Sea offers cooling.

Istria

Istria is the most touristy part of Croatia. It is a peninsula shared by Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. Croatia controls most of the island. Istria has many popular sights such as the Beredine Caves, the Limski Canal and the Kamenjak Protected Nature Area.

Nature

You will find beautiful nature in Croatia’s national parks. A well-known park is Plivice. It is located between Zagreb and Zadar. Other national parks are Krka and Miljet. On Miljet you will find bays with high cliffs. Krka National Park is a park with waterfalls and limestone deposits. It is less touristy than, for example, Plivice.

Croatia: sights

If you follow the Dalmatian coast south, you will find ancient Roman cities. The islands located in the north of the Adriatic Sea are also worth visiting. These are Cres, Losinj, Rab and Krk. They can be reached by ferry.
Other sights in Croatia include the following:

  • The Trakošcan Castle
  • The Pula amphitheater, where fights between gladiators and wild animals took place in Roman times
  • Diocletian’s Palace, with remains from Roman times
  • City walls of Dubrovnik
  • Monastery of Blaca: monastery from the 16th century, on the island of Brac

 

Croatia: food and drinks

Croatia has a number of dishes on the menu that are typical of the Balkans. For example, grilled meat dishes, which have names such as cevapcici and pljeskavica. But you will also find the famous pizza and other Italian specialties there. You will also find influences from Austria and Hungary on the menu.
